Arroyo Boys, Rosemead Girls
Win MVL XC Championships

San Dimas – Soon after brush was cleared from the trail, the Mission Valley League (MVL) Cross Country Championships were run at Bonelli Park in San Dimas on Oct. 31. There were some surprises among the finals results, especially in the girl’s varsity race.
Rosemead High School girl’s varsity team and Arroyo High School boy’s varsity team won the Mission Valley League Championships in a dual meet at Rosemead High on Oct. 26. Rosemead girl’s varsity won the league championship for the first time in more than 20 years, announced Rosemead Coach Eddie Escobar who also was meet director for this year’s MVL Finals.
Rosemead also won the boy’s frosh-soph title, while Arroyo also won the girl’s junior varsity and boy’s junior varsity titles. All of the league champion teams finished league action at 5-0, and the opponent finished at 4-1 as it was unusual for all five teams for both schools to meet undefeated in the last dual meet of the season for the league championship.
At the MVL finals to qualify runners for CIF Southern Section Prelims on Nov. 17 at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Simon Wong of Arroyo High had control soon after the start in the boy’s varsity race and continued his strong run to finish as the league champion with a time of 16:23 on a warm, sunny day in the hills.
South El Monte’s Andrew Centeno in 16:47 and teammate Jayson Perez in 16:50 were second and third, while Rosemead’s Victor Serrano in 17:00 and Arroyo’s Jefferson Du in 17:09 followed with Blas Cruz of El Monte moving into sixth after a disqualification of a runner to qualify Cruz as an individual runner in the CIF prelims.
Arroyo, Rosemead and South El Monte boy’s teams will represent the MVL at CIF Prelims on Nov.17.
Rosemead sophomore Brittnie Munoz easily won all five MVL dual meets, usually by more than one minute, and it was the same result this time as she clocked an easy 20:16 run to become the MVL girl’s varsity champion.
From there it was interesting as some runners who didn’t place high in some league meets stood out in this race, according to some MVL coaches. Arroyo freshman Laura Gazca placed second in 21:12 and many were surprised by El Monte’s Laura Naranjo third place finish in 21:27 as she had her best day according to her El Monte coach. Fourth place was earned by Brenda Pina of South El Monte in 21:32. More runners to surprise were El Monte’s Tiffany Salazar, who placed fifth in 21:33, Arroyo’s May Cheung in 21:40 in sixth and Michelle Ramirez in 21:51 in seventh, ahead of a few league front runners according to dual meet results.
Naranjo, Pina and Salazar qualified as individual runners for the CIF Prelims.
Arroyo, Rosemead and Gabrielino girl’s teams will represent the MVL at the CIF Prelims. It was an exciting day for Gabrielino girl’s varsity as they qualified with an overall team effort even though only having one runner in the top 13 places as their runners were thrilled about advancing to CIF Prelims, according to their coach.
Other MVL Champions are Arroyo’s Andy Vega in 17:41 in boy’s junior varsity, Rosemead’s Thuy Duong in 22:12 in girl’s junior varsity, and Rosemead’s Gilbert Ramirez in 17:55 in boy’s
frosh-soph.
